What is Cholula hot sauce?

This Mexican hot sauce is a very popular hot sauce and goes perfectly with everything from steaks to seafood and from soups to salads. But of course, it’s best to eat this hot sauce together with a Mexican dish. Cholula has the perfect balance between flavor and spice, according to enthusiasts. Be warned, addiction can be very real!

There are six types of Cholula hot sauce: Original, Chipotle, Chili Lime, Chili Garlic, Green Pepper, and Sweet Habanero.

You can buy these 6 types below by clicking on your favorite flavor.

Which one should you choose? As with everything, it depends on what flavors you like. If you are not sure, click on the above links and see what other people say in the reviews.

My personal favorite is the sweet habanero. It’s a little bit spicy, but it’s very sweet. It’s definitely not like other habanero salsas. On a hotness scale from one to ten (ten being the hottest), this probably rates a 3 maximum. But the flavor is very special. If you like very sweet tastes then you should give it a try.

History

The hot sauce is named after the 2,500-year-old city of Cholula, Mexico. It’s the oldest inhabited city in Mexico which is located near Puebla, the capital of the state with the same name.

The name “Cholula”  is derived from the Nahuatl word ”Chollollan”, which means “the place of the retreat.” The owners of the sauce loved this meaning, and Cholula hot sauce was born.

The chili-based hot sauce is currently licensed by Jose Cuervo.

What are the ingredients in Cholula salsa?

The main ingredients in Cholula sauce include Pequin peppers, Arbol peppers, and spices. But the main thing that makes this salsa stand out among other Mexican sauces are the peppers.

Cholula salsa is rich in lesser-known chili peppers on the globe. The Pequin pepper is a tiny chilly with a punch ranging between 40,000 and 60,000 on the pepper scale. Overall, the Pequin peppers are hotter than cayenne peppers. But they won’t make Cholula salsa as hot as you might expect, due to the nice blend with other ingredients. This type of pepper offers an interesting fruitiness in Cholula sauces.

You can add Cholula sauce to several foods, but it works best with Mexican dishes. Also, it can be an excellent addition to eggs, sandwiches, or pizza.

Can you make Cholula sauce at home?

This is a common question since this salsa can be enjoyed daily. And, if you don’t want to choose from the bottled flavors available in the supermarket, you can try the following recipe.

For the best homemade Cholula hot sauce, you will need:

  • 1 cup of distilled white vinegar
  • 2-4 dried Pequin Peppers
  • 4 Dried Arbol Peppers
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • Salt

Take all the ingredients and blend them. Try the mixture and add more Pequin peppers to make it hotter. Make sure you store your sauce in a glass container for prolonged usage.

Final Words

The Cholula hot sauce is one of a kind. And the best part about it is that you will only need a couple of ingredients to make your fresh salsa yourself! Of course, it’s easier to just buy Cholula sauce in the supermarket or online.
